The 2022-23 MLB offseason is in full swing with the World Series officially over. The St. Louis Cardinals have already made a few moves ahead of free agency, which begins on Thursday.
Now, St. Louis is also expected to call up a star prospect to its 40-man roster.
St. Louis Cardinals News
Daniel Guerrero of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports the Cards plan to add outfielder Moisés Gómez to their active 40-man roster. After Gómez's record-breaking season in the minors, he was at risk of being poached during the upcoming Rule 5 Draft, so this promotion prevents that from happening.
The outfielder was originally an international signing by the Tampa Bay Rays, whom he played for in the minors from 2015-2021. He showed off his power at times, including a 19-homer campaign in 2018, but never quite lived up to his potential.
Gómez was then released by Tampa Bay, paving the way for him to land in St. Louis, where he exploded in 2022. The 24-year-old set the Cardinals' minor league home run record with 39 this past season, crushing the ball in both Double-A (23 HR) and Triple-A (16 HR). He finished the year with 94 RBIs in 120 games while slashing .294/.371/.624, even adding 10 steals for good measure.
It'd be no surprise to see Gómez vie for a roster spot in Spring Training. At the very least, the likelihood of him making his MLB debut in 2023 seems high after his monster performance this past season.
