Byron Murphy Gives Update on Back Injury After Signing With Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings wasted no time finding a replacement for Patrick Peterson in free agency this week, agreeing to a deal with talented cornerback Byron Murphy. Many see the Murphy signing as a big win for the team's defense, but it also comes with a bit of risk after he played in just nine games in 2022 due to a back injury.

Murphy gave an update on his recovery from that major ailment at his introductory press conference on Thursday.

The upcoming fifth-year pro clarified that he did not require surgery for his injury. Instead, he utilized "core work" to help heal the impacted area.

Murphy's issue wasn't severe enough to require him to go under the knife, which is a major relief. Minnesota seems confident in his recovery as well, handing him a two-year deal in free agency that can reach up to $22 million with incentives.

This pact is a win-win for both sides. Murphy gets to step into a featured role and is set up to cash in two years down the line if he can put this injury past him. The Vikings, meanwhile, add a legit playmaker to their secondary for a slight discount considering his health history.

Minnesota hopes it gets to see the 2021 version of Murphy who played 16 games and recorded 4 interceptions.
