The Cleveland Browns look to jump back into the NFL playoffs following a disappointing 8-9 campaign. Cleveland enters the offseason with $16.2 million in cap space and they'll have to make smart choices throughout the offseason and free agency.
One area of note is the impending restricted free agency of running back D'Ernest Johnson. Fortunately, Cleveland revealed plans on Friday for a situation in which Johnson returns to work alongside Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt.
Johnson more than proved his worth on this roster last year. The third-year pro garnered two starts amidst some injury troubles for Chubb and Hunt, and absolutely shined. Johnson averaged 122 rushing yards in a trio of games where he saw at least 19 carries. He also found the end zone three times while hauling in 19-of-25 targets.
D'Ernest Johnson Free Agency
The plan for the Browns is simple. They'll tender Johnson a contract, at the right of first refusal number. This gives the young RB a couple of options: signing a one-year, $2.4 million contract to stay with the Browns before hitting free agency in 2023. Or, Johnson can test the market with the Browns retaining rights to match any offers.
Chubb and Hunt account for $11.4 million of Cleveland's cap number, so the best-case scenario is Johnson accepting the one-year deal. It's unlikely the Browns shell out a ton of additional money for their third-stringer, but is worth watching after a strong season.
