The Denver Broncos open the 2022 NFL season with a massive Monday Night Football tilt against the Seattle Seahawks. While the Broncos are projected to win as 6.5-point favorites on FanDuel Sportsbook, they could be shorthanded on the defensive side of the ball.

Broncos insider Zac Stevens reports that linebacker Josey Jewell failed to practice on Saturday. It's the second straight day that the 27-year-old defender has been absent due to a calf injury, seemingly making him a long shot to play on Monday.

Josey Jewell Injury Update

Unfortunately, injuries aren't anything new for the former unanimous All-American. After a breakout campaign in 2020, Jewell was held to only two games last year due to a pectoral injury. He still made a small impact in the games he did play, recording eight tackles, one forced fumble and a broken-up pass.

Jewell's importance to the Broncos goes beyond individual stats, though. As one of Denver's starting interior linebackers, he directs a lot of signals on defense and is important to stopping opponents' run game. Now, it'll be up to a combination of Alex Singleton and Justin Strnad to fill his void.

The only silver lining to the situation was that Jewell was considered day-to-day earlier this week. If he's forced to miss Monday's game, hopefully, it's only a minor setback that he can quickly bounce back from. Otherwise, the Broncos could be in trouble in the long term.
