Opening day of the Major League Baseball season is approaching April 7, and bettors are placing their MLB futures bets at FanDuel Sportsbook. That includes on American League favorites and AL dark horses.
Now we'll ponder the National League MVP odds and look beyond the favorites for some dark horses to consider.
With that in mind, here are three dark-horse National League MVP candidates to consider ahead of the 2022 MLB season.
NL MVP Dark Horses 2022
1. Manny Machado (+3500)
If Manny Machado can carry the Padres with his big bat during Fernando Tatis Jr.'s absence into June, then he'll move up the MVP odds board. The Padres fell off last year and finished below .500, but Manny was still swinging a big stick in Petco's pitchers ballpark. Machado batted .278 and belted 28 HRs with 106 RBIs. His slugging percentage was .489, and if it reaches .500 for the fifth time since 2015, then Manny could get MVP money.
2. Trea Turner (+1800)
Trea Turner is not a big longshot, but he's still behind six others in MVP odds including LA Dodgers teammates Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman. Yet Turner led all players in MLB with a 6.9 WAR last season while hitting 28 HRs, scoring 107 runs and batting .328. Those are MVP numbers and Turner is a threat and MVP dark horse on baseball's best team.
3. Walker Buehler (+10000)
Last July prior to going on the injured list, Mets star pitcher Jacob deGrom was not only the clear Cy Young favorite, but dominating baseball batters and leading the NL MVP odds on FanDuel Sportsbook. How about taking a shot on another pitcher and big longshot to win National League MVP? Walker Buehler is in his prime at age 27. The Dodgers right-hander went 16-4 with a 2.48 ERA and 0.97 WHIP last season. The power pitcher had at least 212 K's for the second time in three seasons. Similar or even better numbers and good health may move Buehler up the MVP odds board similar to deGrom's rise last season.
