The Cincinnati Bengals will look back on Super Bowl LVI and question every little thing they could've changed to earn a different outcome. It's hard to blame anyone for being upset with the loss, especially since a return trip isn't guaranteed.

Bengals special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons has revealed he's still bothered by one specific player's actions during the loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

Evan McPherson Halftime

Simmons specifically called out rookie kicker Evan McPherson for staying out to watch the Super Bowl halftime show instead of joining his teammates in the locker room. The special teams coach called McPherson's choice a "a real sore subject" when interviewed by The Athletic's Jay Morrison.

Simmons then went on to nitpick the kicker after a standout first year and explain how he wants him to improve.

"He needs to become a better practice kicker and kick better than he has ... Not that it’s poor, but I think for him to be elite and go over the top, he’s got to kick better in practice and learn new things.”

Darrin Simmons

It's shocking to hear Simmons be so unsatisfied with McPherson after his crucial role in getting Cincinnati to the Super Bowl in the first place.

Every player certainly has room to improve in practice, but McPherson came through time and time again for the Bengals when it mattered most. He connected on 28-of-33 field goals (84.8%) during the regular season, then tied future Hall-of-Famer Adam Vinatieri's record with 14 FGs in the postseason (and no misses). Not to mention, a few of these kicks came in walk-off, game-winning fashion.

Perhaps Simmons just needs a little more time to cool off after such a big game. Hopefully he can channel his feelings into making McPherson even better in 2022.
