The 2023 NFL Draft will start with the Chicago Bears after they secured the No. 1 overall selection in Week 18. With Justin Fields already in tow, Chicago is largely expected to trade down from the top pick in exchange for a haul from one of several quarterback-needy teams.

The Bears know they need to maximize this opportunity, and GM Ryan Poles dropped his first smokescreen of the 2023 draft cycle on Tuesday.

Poles was asked about Chicago's QB situation for next season. He said Fields will be the team's starter, but then didn't rule out drafting a signal-caller with the top selection. Poles noted he'd have to be "absolutely blown away" to consider that possibility.

It's obvious here that Poles wants to make the teams desperate for either C.J. Stroud or Bryce Young sweat. Those two prospects being seen as legit franchise QBs has several front offices hungry to land them, but the Bears hold all the cards.

Even slightly suggesting a QB is on the table for Chicago's draft plans only aids Poles and company. They want a bidding war to break out, hoping that the quarterback fervor leads to a one-sided deal that benefits them.

There will be plenty of buzz around the No. 1 pick over the next several months as teams look to get a read on the Bears' intentions. Expect Poles to keep his phone lines open in case someone offers up a deal he can't refuse.
