One of the Chicago Bears' top goals this offseason was to improve the offensive line to give quarterback Justin Fields a better shot at success in the 2022 NFL season. Even though they've been relatively quiet in recent weeks, they look to add more offensive linemen depth with their latest potential signing.

Pro Football Network's Aaron Wilson reported Thursday night that the Bears are expected to sign free-agent offensive tackle Julién Davenport to a contract. The decision comes after Davenport had a "successful workout" with the Bears at some point this week.

Chicago Bears Free Agency

A former fourth-round pick by the Houston Texans in 2017, Davenport will bring 60 games (32 starts) worth of experience to the Bears' offensive line.

The 27-year-old veteran spent the 2021 campaign with the Indianapolis Colts, starting in four of the nine games he played in. His performance left a lot to be desired, though, as he surrendered four sacks while taking one penalty on 278 offensive snaps.

The Bears allowed a league-high 58 sacks last season, meaning Davenport will need to be on top of his game if he hopes to improve that situation. Even if he does so and isn't a starter, having a reliable veteran as a backup could do wonders for Chicago's offense.

It'll be interesting to see if the Bears add more offensive line depth at the 2022 NFL Draft next week, which begins on Thursday, April 28 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
