Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield has been nursing a rib injury all week heading into a key AFC North matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Steelers' vaunted pass rush lived up to the hype, getting to Mayfield early and often. Now, late in the third quarter of a 31-7 game, Mayfield has been replaced by backup QB Case Keenum.

There's no word on whether he has been benched or this will be officially declared as injury-related, but realistically it's probably a bit of both.

Trailing by 24 points is basically insurmountable at this stage in the game, but it would still typically be a little early to concede and put in the backups. Mayfield hadn't been effective, completing 10 of 18 passes for 119 yards with 1 TD and 2 interceptions.

His ribs had been taking a real beating, as he was sacked 4 times, and hit plenty more.

A potential Week 7 absence for Mayfield would have an impact on the fantasy football value of the entire Browns' offense, but it also probably wouldn't be crushing.

In Week 7 the Browns get a soft matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals, and Keenum is one of the better backups in the NFL. He averaged 6.9 adjusted yards per attempt (AY/A) in 10 games with the Washington Football Team in 2019, which is actually better than what Mayfield was averaging heading into this game (6.4) or what he averaged in 2019 (6.2).
