Astros Sign Yordan Alvarez to Massive Extension

As soon as Yordan Alvarez was named 2019 American League Rookie of the Year, Houston Astros fans knew they had something special on their hands. The 24-year-old is one of the top young players to watch today and has now been properly rewarded for everything he's done.
ESPN's Jeff Passan first reported on Friday that the Astros and Alvarez have agreed to a monster six-year, $115 million contract that begins next season. The deal also buys three of his free-agent years, where he'll make $26 million annually from 2026 to 2028.
Slugger Yordan Álvarez and the Houston Astros are in agreement on a six-year, $115 million contract extension, sources familiar with the deal tell ESPN. Contract kicks in next season. Biggest contract ever for a DH and $26M/year for 3 FA years. And Astros lock up a great hitter.

Yordan Alvarez Contract Extension
If that contract looks bigger than usual, it's because it is. Alvarez's $115 million deal is the biggest ever handed to a designated hitter and the fourth-largest for a player yet to reach arbitration. That just proves how special he is and how much the Astros value him.
Alvarez paces all Astros with 14 home runs and 31 RBIs through 45 games this season, while his 44 hits are tied for second-best. He's only batting .272 on the year, but his .342 batting average over the last two weeks could be a sign that bigger things are coming.
Since the beginning of the 2021 season, Alvarez is tied for the eighth-most home runs (47) and 11th-most RBIs (135) despite playing fewer games than everyone else ahead of him on both lists. Considering he's only 24, his peak could still be around the corner.
Nevertheless, Alvarez is a key piece that helps the Astros remain a contender both in the present and future. With him sticking around until at least 2028, the Astros likely have a few title runs left in them.
Astros World Series Odds
The icing on top of Alvarez's contract extension would be if wins a championship with the Astros this fall. The chances of that happening look promising as Houston sits +750 (No. 4) to win the 2022 World Series on FanDuel Sportsbook.
