Houston Astros fans should be excited to see a familiar face back in the lineup on Sunday afternoon against the New York Yankees as Jeremy Pena returns from the injured list. The 24-year-old is fully recovered from a thumb injury and set to take over his role as the primary shortstop moving forward.

Jeremy Pena Injury Update

Pena originally injured his thumb when diving for a catch on June 13. The talented rookie then went on the IL and was eligible to be reinstated as early as Friday, but the team gave him a few extra rest days to make sure he was ready to go. An off day on Monday allows Pena to ease back into action.

While the Astros' offensive outputs have been a bit down this season (4.17 runs per game), the efforts of Pena at the plate have been a major bright spot. He is slashing .277/.333/.471 across 54 games played to go along with 27 runs scored, 8 doubles, 9 home runs, 27 RBI and 6 stolen bases.

What may be more interesting about this move is that Houston kept fellow rookie J.J. Matijevic on the roster instead of second year pro Chas McCormick. Although Matijevic is only 2-for-14 on the season, both of those hits have been monster home runs and one came against Gerrit Cole.

Pena is a leading candidate to be named the American League Rookie of the Year and has been a worthy replacement for Carlos Correa, who joined Minnesota Twins in free agency. For now, the Astros have the third-best odds to win the World Series at +650, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
