Exciting Houston Astros rookie shortstop Jeremy Pena has been sidelined since the middle of June with thumb and wrist injuries. His rehab has trended in a positive direction over the last week or so, leaving fans wondering just when the former third-round pick will return to Houston's lineup.

The good news is that Pena, who was eligible to be activated from the injured list on Friday, is expected to rejoin the Astros by the end of the weekend. It was initially expected that he'd be activated on Saturday, but all signs point to his return happening against the New York Yankees on Sunday.

Jeremy Pena Injury Update

Astros insider Chandler Rome made a good point when he tweeted that Pena like wasn't activated for Saturday's game because it wouldn't be fair for him to face the hard-throwing Gerrit Cole, who's 6-1 with a 3.14 ERA and 11.5 strikeouts per nine innings in 14 starts this season.

Pena was everything as advertised before injury struck, helping ease the pain of former Astros shortstop Carlos Correa's offseason departure. The 24-year-old rookie recorded nine home runs and 27 RBIs in his first 54 games, slashing .277/.333/.471 with a .953 fielding percentage.

Entering Saturday, the Astros haven't missed a beat during Pena's absence, racking up a 7-2 record since June 14. The hope is that the promising newcomer can resume his AL Rookie of the Year campaign while helping Houston chase another World Series title in the process.
