The Houston Astros received a positive update on Justin Verlander's injury timeline on Wednesday.
Verlander, who hasn't pitched since Aug. 28 due to a calf injury, is set to make his return from the injured list on Friday against the Oakland A's.

Even at age 39, Verlander has remained one of the best pitchers in baseball. He still leads the American League in wins (16) despite his stint on the shelf while also maintaining the best ERA (1.84) and WHIP (0.86) in baseball.
The Astros will be glad to have their ace back with the playoffs approaching. They currently have MLB's second-best record and are poised to make another pennant run, as FanDuel Sportsbook's MLB odds have them favored to win the AL pennant at +155.
Verlander shouldn't have too much trouble against the light-hitting A's in his return. Only the Detroit Tigers have scored fewer runs than Oakland this year, and the two-time Cy Young winner has a 2.08 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 13 innings versus the A's this season.
