After injuring his hand a week ago, Los Angeles Angels infielder David Fletcher managed to return to the lineup earlier this week. While some fans assumed the injury was behind him, that's no longer the case as the Angels received some tough news regarding the veteran to start the weekend.

Angels manager Phil Nevin announced on Saturday that Fletcher is heading to the injury list, according to Los Angeles Times' Sara Valenzuela. While CT scans revealed that the 28-year-old didn't break his hand, it's clear that he needs more time to heal.

While Fletcher did appear in a few games this week, he was only able to bunt the ball. Angels insider Jeff Fletcher reports that Nevin said it was "unfair" for the Orange, CA native to continue playing considering how he can't even swing a bat at the moment.

After suiting up in 157 games a season ago, injuries have held Fletcher to just 54 games this year. He's recorded a pair of home runs and 15 RBIs while slashing .259/.296/.349 over that stretch. He's split his defensive playing time at shortstop and second base, where has 1.000 and .992 fielding percentages, respectively.

With only 18 games left on the Angels' 2022 schedule, it remains to be seen if Fletcher will return before the end of the season. Los Angeles is already missing the playoffs thanks to a 62-82 record through mid-September, so there isn't any reason to rush him back.

At the end of the day, Fletcher is signed with the Angels until the end of the 2025 season. Perhaps it'll be best to take the rest of the year off, let his hand heal and come back next year, stronger than ever.
