The Los Angeles Angels' pitching staff will play a huge role in determining how they finish the second half of the season. There's been some serious struggles outside of ace Shoehei Ohtani, as evidenced by the Angels' team ERA of 4.90, which ranks as the fifth-worst mark in the majors.
Starter Griffin Canning was sent down to the minors in order to work out his issues, but now he's landed on the injured list.
Griffin Canning Injury
Canning has suffered a lower back strain and will hit the seven-day minor league IL at an unfortunate time. The right-hander earned himself a demotion to Triple-A Salt Lake after giving up 6 earned runs in his start on July 2. Manager Joe Maddon hoped Canning could use this time to work on his command, but this injury will now put that goal on back burner.
The 25-year-old didn't get off to the greatest start in the minors either. He gave up 6 earned runs and didn't even finish the third inning of his first game at Triple-A, though it's worth wondering if this injury has played a role in his recent poor outings.
Canning owns a 5-4 record with a 5.60 ERA across 13 starts for the Angels in 2021. Getting him back to starter-worthy play will be big for Los Angeles' rotation down the stretch. At 45-44, they're on the outside looking in at the playoff race in the AL.
