The Heisman was a two-horse race between Tua Tagovailoa and Kyler Murray last year, and it looks like it will be the same once again.
Tua Tagovailoa (+250) and Trevor Lawrence (+250) are the clear frontrunners in the latest #NCAAF odds to win the 2019 #HeismanTrophy via @FDSportsbook. But would you still take one of them to win it over the field? pic.twitter.com/LQtQMUBkfw— The Duel (@TheDuelSports) March 6, 2019
Tagovailoa is coming off of a 2018 season that saw him finish as the runner-up for the College Football Playoff Championship as well as the Heisman Trophy. Now that Murray, the 2018 Heisman Trophy winner, is off to the NFL, Tagovailoa's (+250) biggest competition for the most prestigious individual accomplishment in college football is Trevor Lawrence (+250), the sophomore quarterback who led Clemson to a championship over Tagovailoa and the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Considering the odds the second-tier of Heisman favorites have, it's clear oddsmakers are confident one of these two star quarterbacks will come out on top. After Lawrence and Tagovailoa, the next best odds to win are Jalen Hurts (+1100), D'Andre Swift (+1400), Jonathon Taylor (+1400), Jake Fromm (+1600) and Justin Fields (+1600) on FanDuel Sportsbook.
I smell a Tua and Trevor vs the field prop coming...— Chris Fallica (@chrisfallica) February 27, 2019
Tua lit up the stat sheet in 2018, throwing for 3,966 yards and 43 touchdowns to just 6 interceptions. While Tua attracted the majority of the media attention, Lawrence quietly had an unbelievable freshman campaign, completing 65.2 percent of his passes for 3,280 yards and 30 touchdowns to 4 interceptions.
Given Lawrence's steady progression throughout the season as the coaches began to open the playbook, he should take a step forward this season as a sophomore.
It will be interesting to see how Tua bounces back in 2019, considering he regressed a bit late last season, although that could have been due to one of his many nagging injuries.
Either way, it should be an exciting 2019 Heisman Trophy Race - even if we have a good idea of who the two finalists will be already.
