New York Jets running back Bilal Powell was placed on injured reserve earlier today, and it appears like the diagnosis on his neck could be a lot worse than originally anticipated.

It's now feared that the neck injury won't only end Powell's 2018 season, but will likely end his NFL career.

Jets head coach Todd Bowles said during a press conference earlier today that Powell's injury "may be worse" than the one wide receiver Quincy Enunwa suffered in 2017, which ultimately ended his season. When asked if Powell's injury could be career-ending, Bowles said, "It's possible. We'll see how the surgery goes."

The news is absolutely gut-wrenching for Powell, who had built up quite an NFL career for himself. Powell has played all eight seasons of his professional career with the Jets, and just moved into the top 10 on the team's career rushing list. This was the final year of his contract.

From a fantasy perspective, look for running back Isaiah Crowell to have a full allotment of RB1 duties this weekend against the Chicago Bears. Second-year back Elijah McGuire is then expected to come off IR in Week 9 and should take over Powell's third-down role from that point forward.
