The early signing period is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to recruiting in college football and doesn't receive the kind of fanfare National Signing Day seems to get year after year. However, some of high school's best talents can still commit at the earliest possible moment, giving football coaches a much clearer idea as to how close their program can be to contending for a national championship.

With that in mind, here are the top five college football programs that signed classes already good enough to meet national title standards.

Georgia missed out on the College Football Playoff this year after falling to LSU in the SEC Championship game, but it may have gotten a leg up on its conference rivals during the early signing period. The Bulldogs grabbed 19 early commitments on Wednesday, including two five-star recruits and 14 four-star recruits.

Many would argue that LSU has the best team in the country this season, and it may keep that trend going with the recruiting class it's building now. The Tigers have grabbed one five-star recruit and 15 four-star recruits with 21 recruits total so far. If LSU can keep this momentum going and come away with a national title, there's no telling how many recruits that might lure in. Of course, the same can be said for Clemson and Ohio State.

3. Ohio State Buckeyes

Ohio State has continued to dominate in the post-Urban Myer Era and based on its early recruitment so far, it doesn't look like the program is going to slow down any time soon. Ryan Day's Buckeyes landed 26 early commitments on Wednesday, including two five-star recruits and a respectable 15 four-star recruits.

2. Alabama Crimson Tide

The Crimson Tide never skip a beat, do they? As has been the case every year since Nick Saban took over in Tuscaloosa, Alabama just continues to reload. The Crimson Tide signed 26 commitments during the early signing period, including three five-star players and a whopping 19 four-star players.

Who else would you expect to top the list? The Clemson Tigers have been a powerhouse in the recruiting game under Dabo Swinney and it doesn't look like it's going to end any time soon. The Tigers have easily won the early signing period so far, receiving commitments from a college football-best six five-star recruits, 11 four-star recruits and six three-star recruits for a grand total of 23 early signees.
