49ers Sign Former XFL Star QB Following Thursday Night Loss to Packers
By Zach Brunner
Following a big 34-17 loss on Thursday Night Football to the Green Bay Packers, the San Francisco 49ers made a roster move to improve their quarterback room, signing former XFL star Josh Johnson.
With a long inactive list for the Week 9 game, the 49ers' offense struggled to find consistency overall. Nick Mullens made the start at quarterback, and he did not find the end zone until late in the fourth quarter. He started in place of the injured Jimmy Garoppolo, who may not return this season, but also, he very well could have played his final snap for the organization.
Whether it was for depth or possibly improving the starting quarterback position, the 49ers signed Johnson on Friday morning. The last time we saw Johnson was with the Los Angeles Wildcats in the XFL. In four games, he passed for 1,076 yards, 11 touchdowns and two interceptions.
Johnson also has a bit of NFL experience. He has started eight games total. Most recently, he started three games for Washington in 2018. In these starts, he passed for just 395 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. He also ran for 75 yards.
