After thrashing the Los Angeles Rams on Monday, the San Francisco 49ers will shoot for another victory when they visit the Carolina Panthers in Week 5. Even though San Francisco is favored to win this game, winning might be easier said than done following the injury update on a key player.

KNBR's Jake Hutchinson reports that 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has ruled out defensive tackle Arik Armstead for Sunday's game. The veteran defender has been dealing with foot and ankle injuries for nearly the last three weeks, hindering his availability for team activities.

If Armstead's status wasn't already concerning enough, Shanahan clarified that this isn't the same foot issue he was dealing with earlier. While the DT's original ailment was unspecified, the 49ers head coach described the latest issue as "a new thing on a different foot," which made the situation "worse."

Missing games is something that Armstead hasn't done in a long time. The 28-year-old anchor played every possible game for San Francisco from 2018 to 2021, proving his reliability. Unfortunately, his latest injury woes prove that he is human after all.

Often a force in the pass rush, Armstead hasn't been that guy in the games he has played this year due to his injuries. He's yet to record a sack or quarterback hit this season, tallying just 5 tackles over three games.

To make matters worse, fellow starting DT Javon Kinlaw is also "unlikely to play" against Carolina. The oft-injured defender is dealing with a knee issue, so it'll be interesting to see how the 49ers handle playing without their top defensive tackles.

49ers vs Panthers Odds

Despite San Francisco's defensive injuries, oddsmakers still have faith in the 49ers against a Panthers team that appears to be in disarray. San Francisco is favored by 6.5 points in Week 5 on FanDuel Sportsbook's NFL odds.
