The San Francisco 49ers will be aggressive this offseason to make sure they're back in Super Bowl contention. With Trey Lance expected to take over under center, solidifying the rest of the roster with talent is crucial to weather any hiccups that could come from his inexperience.
Defense is already this team's strength, and San Francisco may get even better of that side of the ball if they manage to land a newly available Pro Bowl defender.
Frank Clark 49ers
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports that Kansas City Chiefs edge rusher Frank Clark could be on the move this offseason due to salary cap concerns. Fowler added the 49ers are a team to "watch" as a "potential new home."
It's very possible Clark ends up being released if Kansas City can't find a trade market. That would allow the Niners to swoop in and add the 28-year-old to bolster their championship-caliber defense.
The 2021 campaign was a down year for Clark, who recorded just 4.5 sacks, his fewest in a season since his rookie year in 2015.
Though Clark has earned three straight Pro Bowl selections, his sacks and TFL have declined in each of the past three years. That makes him a potential buy-low target for the 49ers, who could reap the rewards if he regains his 2016-2018 form, when he averaged 10.7 sacks per season.
San Francisco should be an attractive destination for Clark as well given the opportunity to play a leading role on a contender. A huge performance in 2022 would lead to one last chance to cash in at the end of his career.
