The NFL is just over a week away from the new league year, meaning the start to a furious free-agency push kicking off on Wednesday, March 16. Free agency is the best opportunity for teams to re-tool their rosters and build a championship contender in 2022.
In anticipation of these proceedings, NFL.com released free-agency predictions for each NFC team, and projects the San Francisco 49ers to land a superstar cornerback.
The predictions suggest that not only will the 49ers clear $25 million in cap space by dealing Jimmy Garoppolo, but they'll use that cap space to sign five-time Pro Bowl CB Stephon Gilmore.
Free Agency Predictions
Gilmore earned his fifth Pro Bowl nod this past season, despite playing only nine games for the Carolina Panthers following contract disputes with the New England Patriots. He's a true lockdown defender, as evidenced by his 77.1 grade in PFF's cornerback rankings. By contrast, the league's best cornerback Jalen Ramsey rated 84.4.
The 49ers see three of their cornerbacks (K'Waun Williams, Josh Norman, Dontae Johnson) head to free agency in a position that already needs upgrading, at least by the 49ers' standards. San Francisco ranked just 16th in Football Outsiders' pass-defense DVOA metric while allowing the sixth-fewest passing yards per game.
This 16th ranking is a far cry from San Fran's No. 2-ranked rush-defense (by DVOA) and building a defense has been the staple of the 49ers' recent success. San Francisco currently owns +1300 odds (5th) to win Super Bowl 57 on FanDuel Sportsbook, and adding Gilmore will only sweeten those chances.
