Teams around the league are busy clearing cap space to sign marquee free agents or acquire big-name players via trade. Either is certainly a possibility for the San Francisco 49ers as they look remain Super Bowl contenders once again in 2022.

San Francisco made moves on Wednesday to free up space, but it's not likely to make a splash.

49ers Cap Space

The 49ers announced contract restructures for both tight end George Kittle and defensive tackle Arik Armstead on Wednesday, creating nearly $18.8 million in cap space. The moves prompted initial excitement given all the speculation going on with free agency and trade rumors.

However, the space will instead allow the Niners to keep Jimmy Garoppolo on the active roster at the start of the new league year. San Francisco needed to get under the cap by this afternoon in order to carry Garoppolo's $27 million cap hit, otherwise the team would've been forced to cut him.

So now this extra space will give the 49ers more time to explore a deal for Jimmy G and get some kind of compensation back rather than cutting him loose for nothing.

The current focus on Deshaun Watson has halted the market for others QBs, but Garoppolo will be a prime target for anyone who's left out of the Watson sweepstakes.
