The San Franciso 49ers have made it abundantly clear that Trey Lance is their starting quarterback going forward, leaving Jimmy Garoppolo in the rearview mirror. Though the 49ers appear to love Lance, recent reports indicate that they may not have as much confidence in him as it appears.

Pro Football Focus' Doug Kyed reports that there's a "degree of uncertainty" regarding how Lance will play this season. The 22-year-old "hasn’t played a full season since 2019," leaving the 49ers coaching staff bracing themselves for a variety of outcomes during the 2022 NFL season.

San Francisco 49ers Rumors

Kyed adds that the 49ers understand that Lance "will likely have some growing pains" this fall. Though last year was his rookie season, he only started two games and played 178 offensive snaps as Garoppolo's backup. Clearly, there's room for him to learn and improve, which won't happen overnight.

Kyed's report is interesting because it was only back in March that NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the 49ers may not be as confident in Lance as some think. Some experts are even concerned about potential arm fatigue, while others don't see it as much of an issue.

Garoppolo has led the 49ers to a pair of NFC Championship Game appearances, as well as Super Bowl LIV, within the last three seasons. Lance has big shoes to fill, especially after completing 41-of-71 passing attempts (57.7%) as a rookie for 603 yards and five touchdowns to seven interceptions.

Fortunately, Lance has great weapons to help him succeed. Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle form one of the best pass-catching trios in the league, plus there's Elijah Mitchell in the backfield. If Lance can also incorporate his impressive rushing skills (4.4 yards on 38 carries in 2021), the future looks bright in the Bay Area as early as this year.

49ers Super Bowl Odds

Lance must take a major step forward to help his team win its first championship since 1994. For now, FanDuel Sportsbook has the 49ers available at +1600 odds (T-No. 6) to win Super Bowl LVII.
