The New York Jets rivalry matchup on the road in Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills was a disaster. The scoreline ended up looking more competitive than the game actually was, losing 27-17 after being down 21-0 at one point in the game. The team lacked chemistry on both sides of the ball, and they won't find any respite heading into a Week 2 game against the defending NFC Champs.
Here are three bold predictions for the New York Jets in their home opener against the San Francisco 49ers.
3. Josh Adams Records 60-Plus Yards From Scrimmage
The San Francisco 49ers defense is a tough one, but last season they did fare better against the pass (No. 2 in Football Outsiders' DVOA metric) than the run (No. 9). They also gave up a combined 86 yards on 22 carries to the Arizona Cardinals' running backs in Week 1. With Le'Veon Bell likely out, Frank Gore will probably lead the New York Jets backfield. The 23-year old Josh Adams did notch 2 carries and 2 targets after Bell went down in Week 1, though, and he could be heavily involved this week.
2. Marcus Maye Records Another Sack
Jamal Adams was a beast on the blitz in defensive coordinator Gregg Williams' system last year, but now it appears safety Marcus Maye has stepped into Adams' old role. Maye had 2 sacks in the season opener, and he was used heavily as a blitzer in an attempt to slow down Josh Allen and the Bills. The 49ers have a much better offensive line, but a less elusive quarterback in Jimmy Garoppolo. They also have a banged up wide receiver corps right now that may force the Niners' QB to hold the ball for longer than he likes.
1. The Jets Defense Intercepts Garoppolo Twice
One minor bright spot of the Jets performance in Week 1 was their defense's ability to force turnovers, something this NYJ unit has commonly been able to do under Gregg Williams. Garoppolo had three 2-INT games in the 2019 season, and the Jets' pass rush could force him to make a few mistakes this week.
