The San Francisco 49ers were on the cusp of making the Super Bowl before they blew a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter of the NFC Championship game. Head coach Kyle Shanahan has the pieces in place to compete in the NFC West next season, but could benefit from upgrading the roster a bit.
Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo's chances of staying in San Francisco are reportedly very low. Cutting him loose would give the team a ton of available cap space to sign big name players. With that in mind, here are three free agents the 49ers need to sign to make a Super Bowl run next year.
San Francisco 49ers Offseason Moves
1. Sign Gerald Everett, TE, Seattle Seahawks
Shanahan has been trying to find a high-quality No. 2 tight end to play alongside starter George Kittle ever since he was hired in San Francisco. It makes a lot of sense given Kittle has missed 13 games due to injury over the last three seasons. Gerald Everett lines up as an affordable option here and is coming off a bounce back season with the Seattle Seahawks. The fifth-year pro posted career-high marks across the board by hauling in 48 receptions for 478 yards and 4 touchdowns. Everett is only 27 and has a ton of experience playing in the NFC West division. Pairing him with Kittle would create havoc for opposing defenses and give Shanahan a new weapon to use on offense.
2. Sign Cordarrelle Patterson, WR/RB, Atlanta Falcons
Wide receiver turned running back Cordarrelle Patterson is going to be one of the most sought after free agents of the offseason and for good reason. The ninth-year pro finished with 1,166 yards from scrimmage in 2021 and scored a whopping 11 total touchdowns. Patterson will likely be looking to join a playoff team and San Francisco has proven what they can do with versatile offensive players. After all, WR Deebo Samuel rushed for 365 yards during the regular season this year. Reports claim Shanahan has gone after Patterson in the free agent market before and that persistence could give the 49ers a leg up when trying to draw the 30-year-old to the Bay area. He could be just the spark this team is missing.
3. Sign Patrick Peterson, CB, Minnesota Vikings
If there's one area the 49ers absolutely have to address this offseason, it is at cornerback. Veterans Josh Norman and Jason Verrett are set to be free agents and the only other options at the position are coming off their rookie seasons. Grabbing a veteran to both act as a stopgap and mentor on this team would be a smart idea. Patrick Peterson fits that role to a tee. The three-time All-Pro spent the 2021 season with the Minnesota Vikings and logged 45 tackles (2.0 for loss), 5 pass breakups and 1 interception across 13 games played. Patterson has some gas left in the tank at age 31 and this front office has built a reputation for signing trusty veterans to short-term deals. He's a name to watch out for.
