Cam Newton's 2020 campaign with the New England Patriots wasn't particular memorable, with the former MVP failing to impress particularly in the passing game. However, he admitted that his battle with COVID-19 impacted his season, and he was still effective on the ground.

With that in mind, here are three contenders who could take a chance on Newton in free agency.

3. Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers are currenlty deciding on if they want to continue with franchise quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Big Ben is clearly showing his age, with the team falling apart in the second half of the season and suffering a Wild Card exit. Even if Roethlisberger comes back, Newton would give Pittsburgh a legit backup in case Big Ben's play goes south early in the season. This would be a chance for Newton to have a real shot at earning starter reps on a loaded team, giving him a great opportunity to improve his perception around the league if he can lead the team to wins.

2. Miami Dolphins

After an up-and-down rookie campaign, Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa is now in line to be the team's starter. Partially concerning is that Tagovailoa couldn't beat out veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick for the starting role last season. The Dolphins' quarterback instability played a part in them missing the playoffs, so Miami would be smart to add a capable veteran in Newton. Not only would the former MVP hopefully push Tagovailoa to prove he's starter-worthy, but Newton could also take over for this budding contender if the Dolphins' second-year QB struggles.

1. Washington Football Team

The Washington Football Team is the most clean fit for Newton, since they have a clear need for a new starting quarterback. Alex Smith isn't the one to help this team realize its potential, and the newly re-signed Alex Heinicke is still an unknown talent. A Newton signing would reunite the former MVP with head coach Ron Rivera and give Washington a dynamic dual threat. While Newton managed to throw for just 2,657 yards and 8 TDs last season, his weapons were lacking. Plus, he still added 592 yards and 12 scores on the ground. With Terry McLaurin and Antonio Gibson already in place, a top-10 defense and money to add weapons, this team is just a QB away from being serious players in 2021.
