The Minnesota Twins are one of the better teams in the American League in 2022 and have several young pieces that will make them tough to deal with each passing year. Fortunately, they have a great opportunity to add to that core at next month's MLB Draft.
ESPN's 2022 MLB Draft has the Twins projected to add an elite-level college bat to their prospect cupboard. Analyst Kiley McDaniel lists Minnesota using the eighth overall pick in the first round to select Virginia Tech right fielder Gavin Cross.
Twins Mock Draft
Starting RF Max Kepler will be a free agent in 2024, so it makes sense that they'd want to add a prospect like Cross to their pipeline.
The 21-year-old enters the draft after experiencing his best season with the Hokies. Cross set new career-highs in home runs (17), RBIs (50) and stolen bases (12) while slashing .328/.411/.660. Needless to say, there aren't too many players in this draft with that kind of potential.
The son of former minor-leaguer Adam, Cross could also add some flexibility to the Twins' lineup, possessing the ability to play centerfield and first base in addition to RF. He excels in the outfield, though, bringing a mix of speed and a good eye for tracking the ball to the table.
Twins fans won't have to wait long to find out if they should think about ordering a Cross jersey. The 2022 MLB Draft begins on Sunday, July 17 in Los Angeles, CA.
