The Minnesota Twins are mostly happy with how Sonny Gray in his seven starts so far during the 2022 MLB season. Unfortunately, his health has not been as impressive as injuries have kept him in and out of the lineup multiple times while June has only begun.

Now the 32-year-old veteran right is set to miss time once again. The Twins announced on Thursday that Gray has been placed on the 15-day injury due to a right pectoral strain. His placement is retroactive to Monday, making June 14 the earliest possible return date.

Sonny Gray Injury Update

Things were looking bright on Wednesday when Gray managed to play catch, but obviously needs more time to heal. The silver lining is that he's dealing with a pectoral injury rather than re-aggravating the hamstring issue that sidelined him from late April to early May.

The Twins hope that the two-time MLB All-Star can pick up from where he left off when he returns to the mound. He's 3-1 so far in his aforementioned seven starts, pitching to career-highs when it comes to ERA (2.41) and WHIP (0.980) while striking out 10.4 batters per nine innings.

The Athletic's Dan Hayes reported that Triple-A call-up Yennier Cano will take Gray's spot in the rotation. The 28-year-old is 1-0 with a 0.75 ERA in nine relief appearances with the St. Paul Saints in 2022 but also has an abysmal 13.50 ERA over 7.1 innings pitched with the Twins this season.

The Twins currently lead the AL Central with a 30-22 record — 5.0 games ahead of the second-place Chicago White Sox and Cleveland Guardians. With FanDuel Sportsbook only giving Minnesota the second-best odds (+125) to win its division, it's clear that they could use a healthy Gray back sooner than later.
