Trey Lance has opened the second half as the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. Jimmy Garoppolo is reportedly dealing with a calf injury after an ineffective first half. If this is really the start of the Trey Lance era, fantasy managers are looking at a potential QB1 the rest of the way.

With Garoppolo at the helm, it felt like this San Francisco offense was leaving a lot of meat on the bone. That's not to say Garoppolo had been bad. But this is a loaded skill-position group led by one of the best offensive minds in football. With the right quarterback, this offense has top-five potential.

From a real-football perspective, there's no way to know if Lance is that guy yet. But from a fantasy perspective, Lance's physical gifts should put him in the QB1 conversation right away.

No one is better at scheming up the run game than Kyle Shanahan. And now he's got a quarterback who ran for 1,110 yards and 14 touchdowns in his last full college season. The last time we saw Shanahan coach a true dual-threat QB was Robert Griffin in 2012, and he finished as the QB5 that year.

That said, we have to mention the downside as well. Lance was probably riding the bench for a reason. Nothing showcases that downside better than the play of fellow rookie Justin Fields, who has 11.2 fantasy points through two career starts.

If you can handle the boom-or-bust value, Lance is an intriguing start against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 5. But fantasy managers had better make sure they have a backup ready, as we still have no way of knowing whether or not he'll get the nod.
