The Jacksonville Jagaurs couldn't resist taking dynamic running back Travis Etienne in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Jacksonville will be eager to get the most out of the former Clemson back, including using him as a pass-catching weapon for new quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
The potential for Etienne to unseat James Robinson could boost the rookie's fantasy outlook ahead of the 2021 season.
Travis Etienne Fantasy
Etienne was viewed by some as the top RB prospect ahead of the draft after a fantastic four-year run at Clemson. He ran for 4,952 yards and a whopping 70 TDs over 55 games. Etienne has serious value as a dual-threat back as well, totaling 102 receptions for 1,155 yards and 8 TDs in college.
It's easy to dream about Etienne's potential in a Jaguars offense that needs playmakers around Lawrence. One possible roadblock comes in the form of Robinson, who burst onto the scene as an undrafted rookie and became Jacksonville's lead back in 2020. He turned 240 rushes into 1,070 yards and 7 TDs while also grabbing 49 receptions for 344 yards and 3 TDs last season.
Still, it's not hard to see Etienne matching or even surpassing Robinson's production if given a similar chance. The Jaguars clearly thought they were better off using a first-round pick on Etienne than running things back with Robinson, so the lead role is there for the taking.
Etienne's current status as RB29, according to FantasyPros' Average Draft Position (ADP) data, showcases some skepticism about his workload with Robinson in town. But it wouldn't be shocking to see Etienne's connection with Lawrence vault him up the Jaguars' depth chart and turn him into a fantasy steal.
