The Detroit Tigers are going to be without Niko Goodrum for the foreseeable future as the club placed him on the 10-day injured list on Thursday with a left groin strain. The 29-year-old utility player suffered the injury in a 5-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night. After Goodrum hit a two-RBI double in the fifth inning, it became clear that something wasn't right as he threw his helmet in frustration. He exited the game right away and did not return.

In the meantime, the Tigers have called up outfield Jacob Robson from Triple-A Toledo to take Goodrum's place in the lineup.

Niko Goodrum Injury Update

This news has to be frustrating to fans, especially with the injury trouble that Goodrum has been dealing with this season. It was only on Tuesday that he had returned from a month-long stint on the injured list with a calf issue. Before that, he had missed most of June on the IL with a finger tendon injury.

Injuries have held Goodrum to playing just 65 of Detroit's 116 games in 2021. During that span, he's recorded 6 home runs and 21 RBI while tying his career-high in stolen bases with 12. After an underwhelming .184/.264/.335 slash line in 2020, Goodrum has also been bouncing back in that regard by slashing .224/.304/.348.

Goodrum's positional versatility and veteran presence will be missed for the next little while, especially as the Tigers sit 10.0 games back of the final American League Wild Card spot with 46 games remaining.

Detroit's first test without the veteran utility player will come Friday at 4:05 p.m. EST as the club is set to take on Baltimore once again. FanDuel Sportsbook is projecting the Orioles to win at -146 odds while the Tigers are +126 underdogs.
