The Carolina Panthers are entering a new phase by bringing in head coach Matt Rhule and letting go of quarterback Cam Newton.
However, there is still a need to bridge the gap by re-signing productive players, and one lineman on the current roster should get an extension sooner rather than later.
Right tackle Taylor Moton has started in the last 32 games for the Carolina Panthers and has become an anchor on the right side of the offensive line. Moton's contract is currently paying him only $1.04 million per year, and his market value will far surpass that if he hits free agency. Spotrac estimates his market value is $14 million per year, and GM Marty Hurney would be wise to give him an extension before any other team can bid.
Moton earned a very solid 76.2 grade from Pro Football Focus last season and will be 26 years old when he hits free agency next year. Despite being a second-round pick in 2017, Moton has been undervalued by his rookie contract and likely will not settle for a bad offer. The Panthers won't have as much cap space to work with as they'd like in 2021 after giving big contracts to Christian McCaffrey and Teddy Bridgewater. However, between signing aging left tackle Russell Okung or Moton, the choice is obvious.
The Panthers also don't have any readily available replacements. Their current backup right tackle, Matt Kaskey, is an unproven, undrafted free agent. If the Panthers feel bad about giving a huge extension for a right tackle rather than a left tackle, they could even move Moton to left tackle, a position he's played before, and draft a new offensive lineman in 2021.
Whatever the Panthers decide to do, re-signing Moton will certainly be their top priority in 2020 and into 2021. A high-quality offensive lineman like Moton in his prime with a record of good health should be a key building block for a future contender for Matt Rhule and his staff.
