The Dolphins Need to Sign This XFL Star

The Miami Dolphins have no shortage of ammunition for their rebuild, having completely blown it up in the 2019 NFL season.

They have three first-round picks in the 2020 NFL Draft, have already added a couple key free agents in Byron Jones and Kyle Van Noy, and still have the fourth-most cap space in the NFL.

Having this ammunition doesn't mean they can afford to be wasteful with their moves. One of the best low-risk and high-reward free agent additions they can make is bringing in wide receiver Cam Phillips, formerly of the XFL's Houston Roughnecks.

The wide receiver corps was one of the few bright spots in Miami last year. Preston Williams looked incredibly promising as a rookie, and DeVante Parker finally had his breakout season. Williams suffered a season-ending knee injury, though, and it remains to be seen if Parker can keep up his high level of play. Adding another young wideout with a big ceiling makes a ton of sense.

Phillips went undrafted in 2018 after racking up 1,947 yards and 12 touchdowns in his final two season at Virginia Tech, and he failed to stick on the Buffalo Bills' roster. He then put together an outstanding breakout campaign in the XFL in 2020.

In the shortened five-game season, no player had more targets (44) or receptions (31) than Phillips. The edge he had over the field in production was even more impressive than in volume, and his 455 receiving yards were 117 more than anyone else in the league, while his 9 receiving touchdowns were more than double the next-best mark of 4. Yes, that production came against a lower level of competition than he'll face in the NFL, but he out-classed his peers by an absurd margin. Beating the second-leading receiver in yards by 34.6 percent would be like if Michael Thomas finished with 1,876 yards compared to Julio Jones' second-ranked 1,394 in the 2019 NFL season.

Even after his XFL success, Phillips isn't likely to command a huge contract. His QB, P.J. Walker, got just a 2-year, $1 million deal after putting together a similarly dominant 2020 campaign.

Miami's offense can use all the young weapons they can get, and it would be a huge mistake to pass up on Phillips, especially given what he would likely cost.
