Since 2010, only two Super Bowls have finished at kickoff with spreads of at least 5 points. This included Super Bowl 50, when the Carolina Panthers were favored by 5 over the Denver Broncos, and Super Bowl XLIV, when the Indianapolis Colts were favored by 5 over the New Orleans Saints.
The biggest recorded spread in Super Bowl history dates back to Super Bowl XXIX in 1995 (for the 1994 NFL season). The 13-3 San Francisco 49ers were favored by a stunning 18.5 points over the 11-5 San Diego Chargers. The 49ers ended up covering this spread and took down the Chargers, 49-26.
How Many Times Has the Underdog Won a Super Bowl?
Dating back to 1967, underdogs are 24-28-2 all-time against the spread (ATS). The underdog has actually won the Super Bowl 18 different times, with the most recent coming last year as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs despite entering the big game as 3-point underdogs.
