Jeff Wilson's role in the San Francisco 49ers' backfield was diminished the second that his team acquired elite rusher Christian McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers last week. Now, it looks like Wilson could be on the move as the Nov. 1 trade deadline approaches.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Friday that the 49ers have received offers for Wilson and are open to trading him. The veteran running back carries a $1.085 million cap hit and is under contract until the end of the season.

Jeff Wilson Trade Rumors

Though a team can't have too much RB depth, the 49ers don't need Wilson anymore. In addition to having a fully healthy McCaffrey, San Francisco is slated to get Elijah Mitchell back from the injured reserve in the next few weeks, likely sliding Wilson to the No. 3 spot in the backfield.

Wilson has done a great job at being the 49ers' lead back this season. His injury woes seem to be behind him as he's suited up in all seven games so far, turning 88 carries into 454 rushing yards and two touchdowns. On top of that, he's caught eight passes for another 70 yards.

With how easily RBs can get hurt, it's easy to see why teams would call the 49ers about Wilson. After all, it was only last week when the New York Jets sent a sixth-rounder to the Jacksonville Jaguars to acquire James Robinson after rookie RB Breece Hall tore his ACL.

The 49ers might also decide to keep Wilson for the remainder of the year. Both McCaffrey and Mitchell have had several injuries over the last few seasons, so San Francisco may opt to keep the 25-year-old as an insurance policy.

Nevertheless, fans won't have to wait long to find out of Wilson is on his way out of the Bay Area. The NFL trade deadline goes into effect on Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET.
