The New York Jets have been trying to find a trade partner for Sam Darnold, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that they’ve agreed to send him to the Carolina Panthers.

They will reportedly receive a 2021 sixth-round pick to go with second-and-fourth-round picks in 2022. That’s not quite what the Jets were hoping for, but it’s probably fair value for the fourth-year quarterback. The Philadelphia Eagles didn’t net much more than that for Carson Wentz, who was an MVP candidate before getting hurt in 2017.

Schefter adds that the Jets and Panthers have been discussing a Darnold trade for weeks, and the Panthers’ offer kept creeping up until where it landed it on Monday.

Darnold will have the opportunity to compete with Teddy Bridgewater for the Panthers’ starting quarterback job this offseason. Darnold struggled during his tenure with the Jets, and he averaged a dismal 5.2 adjusted yards per attempt (AY/A) last season. Bridgewater was significantly better at 7.2 AY/A, but Darnold should be considered the favorite since the Panthers were so aggressive about landing a new quarterback this offseason.

With Darnold now officially out of New York, the Jets can lock in on drafting a quarterback with the No. 2 pick in the upcoming draft. They are widely expected to take Zach Wilson, who is currently -1050 to be selected second overall on FanDuel Sportsbook.
