The New Orleans Saints made six picks in the 2021 NFL Draft. They landed some key defensive contributors like Houston's Payton Turner and Ohio State's Pete Werner while also taking a mid-round gamble on a quarterback in Notre Dame's Ian Book.

But the team's always-crafty general manager Mickey Loomis wasn't done there. He picked up two of the best undrafted free agents, signing Syracuse DB Trill Williams and Tennessee DB Bryce Thompson.

Saints News

Prior to the draft, most mocks had Williams as a fourth-round pick, and few believed he'd go undrafted. With a name like Trill, how could he? Getting a mid-round talent like that without wasting any draft capital is a pretty shrewd move.

As for Thompson, his pre-draft stock wasn't quite as high, but he was also considered one of the best undrafted free agents available. Thompson earned SEC All-Freshman honors back in 2018, though he never quite lived up to that status in his two subsequent seasons with the Volunteers. Perhaps the change of scenery could help him live up to his potential.

The Saints also picked up UDFA Shaq Smith, a linebacker from Maryland. Smith tested out as a relatively average athlete, but he was a former four-star recruit coming out of high school.

All three look moves look like solid pickups for a Saints team that's looking to reload after losing a ton of talent in free agency this offseason.
