The Kansas City Royals were one of the biggest surprises in the first month of the 2021 MLB season. Kansas City got off to a 15-9 start in April before things took a turn in May. Since May 1, the Royals are 4-13 and now sit 6.0 games back in the AL Central division.

The bad news continued in May when starting pitcher Danny Duffy left the game with pain in his throwing arm. He was placed retroactively on the 10-day IL, but it seems like the Royals caught a huge break with this injury. Recently, Duffy offered an optimistic outlook on this potentially concerning injury.

Danny Duffy Royals Injury

Duffy has been the most reliable member of the Royals pitching staff this season. The 32-year-old lefty is pitching to a stifling 1.94 ERA this season in 7 starts. He's also averaging 10.4 strikeouts per nine innings, a career-high mark.

That's especially why the first news of his injury was so concerning. Anytime a pitcher leaves with pain in their throwing arm, it's cause for worry. But, Duffy has experienced Tommy John surgery once before in his career and remains optimistic that he's not headed for another operation.

“I’m very confident that this is going to be a speed bump, and we’ll be just fine," said Duffy.

It's a waiting game to see how long Duffy is sidelined, but his optimism is a sure sign of relief for Royals fans. Currently, Kansas City has the third-best odds (+1400) to win the AL Central division, according to the latest MLB odds on FanDuel Sportsbook.
