The 2021 Home Run Derby is already full of big stars as Shohei Ohtani, Pete Alonso, and Trey Mancini have all accepted an invitation to compete. Well, a fourth player can be added to the list as shortsop Trevor Story of the Colorado Rockies will be launching home runs at Coors Field, too.
The MLB has seemingly made it a tradition to invite one hometown player to the derby every year. Story fits that bill with All-Star festivities set to take place Denver this season and it's safe to say that the young playmaker should be able to put on a show for the crowd.
Story is in the midst of a down season so far, but he still leads Colorado with 16 stolen bases. Overall, the two-time all-Star is hitting .254/.327/.443 with 38 runs scored, 9 home runs and 34 RBI through 66 games played. He has hit 143 home runs across six MLB seasons spent with the Rockies.
It's notable to point out that Story is a popular candidate to be traded at the MLB deadline in late July. It's possible that this could be one of the 28-year-old's last performances as a hometown player.
This will be Story's first time participating in the event as he hopes to unseat Alonso as the champion. He will give the fans someone to cheer on when the Derby kicks off on Monday, July 12th at 6 p.m.
