With just 18 games left in the 2021 season, the Cincinnati Reds are in a battle for the ages to secure their second straight postseason appearance. That battle looks a little more manageable on Tuesday after Cincinnati received some amazing news on Jesse Winker's latest injury update.
After missing nearly a month of action with an intercostal strain, Winker is cleared to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday night. This also means the Reds could target his return for a three-game set against the Los Angeles Dodgers starting on Friday.

Winker truly broke out in his fifth MLB season, crushing career-high marks in almost every statistical categories. On the year, the 28-year-old outfielder is slashing .307/.395/.560 with 24 home runs and 71 RBIs in 109 games played.
The first-time 2021 All-Star returns to a Reds squad that is in control of their own destiny. Cincinnati owns the second NL Wild Card Spot, but holds onto a slim 0.5-game lead over the San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals. The Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets also trail this second Wild Card spot by less than 3.5 games.
