The MLB playoffs are a pipe dream for the Boston Red Sox, who sit eight games back of the American League's final Wild Card spot. They're simply hoping to end the season on a high note for their fans, which will be made easier now that second baseman Trevor Story is set to return from the injured list.
With Story's return scheduled for Saturday, the Red Sox had no choice but to make room on their roster. According to team insider Chris Cotillo, the odd man out this time is disappointing prospect Jarren Duran, who opened the year as Baseball America's No. 91-ranked prospect.
Red Sox Roster News
After struggling in the Majors last year, the Red Sox hoped that Duran could turn it around in 2022. Unfortunately, that hasn't even been close to the case. He has only three home runs and 17 RBIs while slashing .220/.283/.365 in 57 games. His 28.8% strikeout rating is also noticeably above the MLB average of 22.8%.
It'll be interesting to see how Story performs in his first game since July 12. The two-time All-Star signed a six-year, $140 million with the Red Sox in the offseason and had 15 HRs, 58 RBIs and a .221 batting average in 81 games before getting sidelined.
Fortunately, Story's return game on Saturday is a team that he's had some decent success against: the Tampa Bay Rays. While 14 games against the Rays is a small sample size, the 29-year-old has 14 hits, four HRs and a .280 batting average over that stretch.
Rays vs Red Sox Odds (Aug. 27)
The Red Sox need Story at his best to help them pull off an upset at Fenway Park. FanDuel Sportsbook favors the Rays at -134 on the moneyline, while the Red Sox sit at +114 odds about an hour ahead of the first pitch.
