The Pittsburgh Pirates are in the middle of a long rebuild and have not made the MLB Playoffs since 2015. Their top priority right now is building talented depth on the roster in any way possible. The front office proved that be true when they claimed infielder Miguel Andujar off of waivers on Sunday.

Pittsburgh Pirates News

Andujar looked capable of taking over the sport when he burst onto the scene as a versatile rookie in 2018. He slashed .297/.328/.527, hit 47 doubles and smacked 27 home runs on his way to finishing as a runner-up in the AL Rookie of the Year voting. He has struggled to perform ever since, though.

In 100 plate appearances (PA) with the New York Yankees this season, Andujar slashed .229/.250/.281 to go along with 9 runs scored, 2 doubles, 1 home run, 8 RBI and 4 stolen bases. He was constantly surrounded by trade rumors, but no suitor emerged and he was designated for assignment, instead.

This is a classic low-risk, high-reward signing for the Pirates. Andujar is only 27 years old and has two years left of arbitration control left. While he has struggled in the majors this year, it's worth noting he is slashing .285/.330/.487 with 17 doubles and 13 home runs and across 297 PA at the Triple-A level.

Andujar joins a lengthy list of former top prospects in need of a change of scenery to join Pittsburgh. It's a list that includes Robert Stephenson, Michael Chavis, Zack Collins and others. Looking ahead, Andujar has a shot to earn a starting role at first base or in the outfield for the Pirates next summer.
