Pete Alonso set the MLB record for most home runs by a rookie in 2019, leading the majors with 53, and the odds suggest he's due to have similar numbers in 2020.

FanDuel Sportsbook has the 25-year-old as the favorite, with +1000 odds, to lead the MLB in home runs in the shortened season.

Those odds put Alonso just ahead of Joey Gallo and Mike Trout at +1100. Giancarlo Stanton is at +1400 and Cody Bellinger and Yordan Alvarez are at +1700. It's impressive for a second-year player to be anywhere on this list, let alone ahead of guys like Trout and Bellinger, last year's AL and NL MVP winners.

Mets fans will be excited to finally watch Alonso's sophomore season after the long delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They will be hoping that Alonso can help lead the young Mets' offense to the playoffs for the first time since 2016.

For odds to win NL MVP in 2020, Alonso sits in a five-way tie for tenth-favorite at +2500 with Ketel Marte, Eugenio Suarez, Manny Machado, and Javier Baez. He's also listed as the favorite at +250 to be the first Mets player to hit a home run in 2020. Clearly, many think Alonso's meteoric rise from untested rookie to one of baseball's best is for real.
