The New England Patriots added a significant piece to their roster by signing Cam Newton on Sunday night. The signing will give them a much-needed boost at quarterback after the departure of Tom Brady during the offseason.

When Brady left for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it looked like the Patriots would head into the season with unproven backup Jarrett Stidham as their starting quarterback, but Newton's arrival has completely changed the trajectory of their season.

That fact is best seen in the Super Bowl odds at FanDuel Sportsbook, where the Patriots' odds have improved from +2300 in mid-April to +1700 after signing Newton.

The dramatic shift, which moves the Patriots to tied for seventh-best odds in the NFL, appears to be solely due to Newton's arrival. While the Patriots were considered a contender due to their elite defense, they were always going to be held back with Stidham at quarterback. Now, the Patriots are the clear favorites to win the AFC East (+100) over the Buffalo Bills (+160). New England also has the third-best odds to win the AFC outright (+700).

Newton's performance level will be a major question as the 31-year-old missed almost all of 2019 with a Lisfranc fracture in his foot. He also dealt with a shoulder injury in the second half of the 2018 campaign that significantly impacted his play down the stretch.

When healthy, Newton is one of the most talented and dynamic quarterbacks in football. In fact, he currently has the 12th-best odds to win the 2020 NFL MVP award now that he's in New England.

While it's hard to expect him to be at his MVP peak from 2015, he's still talented enough to be an above-average starting quarterback.

Given the major shift, bettors are definitely prepared for the possibility of a resurgent Patriots team.
