The Carolina Panthers kept things interesting in the NFC South with a big Thursday Night Football win over the Atlanta Falcons last night, but that win didn't come without some bad news.
Cornerback Donte Jackson went down with an injury in the win, and the early diagnosis is seriously concerning.
Leg injuries in general are never good for players that rely on speed and agility as much as cornerbacks, but Achilles injuries in particular can be devastating. Panthers fans will have to await further tests to know the severity, but a serious tear could have Jackson on the shelf for a year.
Jackson hasn't exactly been a shutdown corner, but he's played a big role for this Panthers defense for the last five years, playing 71% of their snaps this season and at least 80% in three of the past four years.
Former 2020 first-round pick C.J. Henderson will probably pick up the slack in Jackson's absence, having only eclipsed 70% of the defensive snaps in the two games Jackson has been injured in so far this year. And that would leave Keith Taylor picking up the slack as the No. 3 corner.
Even with the division's struggles, FanDuel Sportsbook's NFL odds have the Panthers as massive underdogs to win the NFC South, ranking fourth at +2400 while each other team has +600 odds or better.
