Northcut was born in Cincinnati and raised in Ohio, where he was drafted out of high school by the Red Sox in 2018. The 23-year-old infielder was progressing through Boston's system before the trade, rising up to Double-A this year. Northcut displayed impressive power this season with 30 home runs, 75 RBIs and a .272 ISO in 103 games across High-A and Double-A.
For his part, Northcut appears excited to return to his home state and play for his hometown team.

The Reds hope he'll continue to improve and eventually reach the majors. He still has some work to do, however, as he's batting just .219 with a 35.2% strikeout rate this year. If he can cut down on his feast-or-famine tendencies, though, he may prove to be a great addition for Cincinnati.
