While it's not official as of yet, it seems to be the end of the road for veteran quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. His impending retirement will leave the Pittsburgh Steelers with a question mark at the QB position heading into the offseason. Finding their new leader should be a top priority.
It could be through free agency, a trade or even the 2022 NFL Draft. No matter what, the Steelers' front office needs to be bold and make a move. With that being said, here are three of the most likely starting quarterbacks for Pittsburgh in 2022.
1. Russell Wilson
Veteran quarterback Russell Wilson is going to have his name attached to a lot of different teams this offseason. He has expressed interest in being traded to a team capable of winning the Super Bowl and the Steelers fit that mold pretty well. Pittsburgh owns a top-10 NFL defense and has an arsenal of offensive weapons including Diontae Johnson and Najee Harris. Wilson has racked up 292 passing touchdowns compared to just 87 interceptions over the course of his 10-year career. The seven-time Pro Bowler knows what it takes to play winning football and the Steelers have enough future capital to make it worthwhile for Seattle. This is the kind of move that turns Pittsburgh into a legitimate Super Bowl threat in 2022.
2. Marcus Mariota
The Steelers could opt to find their starter in free agency. Marcus Mariota's name sticks out in that scenario given he already has a wealth of experience when it comes to leading an NFL offense. Mariota is a former No. 2 overall pick and has spent the last couple of years backing up Derek Carr in Las Vegas. The upside that comes with bringing in the 28-year-old signal-caller is his rushing capabilities. Head coach Mike Tomlin has been adamant that mobile QBs are taking over the game. Well, Mariota has racked up over 1,500 yards on the ground in his career and has scored 13 rushing touchdowns. He could be a great option to lead the team for at least a few seasons.
3. Kenny Pickett
Of course, Pittsburgh's easiest strategy may be simply drafting a quarterback when they are on the clock with the 20th overall pick in April. Steelers fans likely know all too well who Kenny Pickett is given he has been in town playing for the Pittsburgh Panthers since 2017. The 23-year-old prospect took over college football this past season and finished the year with 42 touchdowns (7 interceptions). His accuracy has been improving with each passing game and his arm talent is amongst the best in the country. Pittsburgh drafted Big Ben in the first round back in 2004 and look how well that turned out. Don't count the Steelers out as a possible landing spot for Pickett.
