MLB Insider Names Rockies' Single Biggest Trade Priority Ahead of Deadline

The Colorado Rockies' inability to win games away from Coors Field has them sitting at the bottom of the NL West with a 35-47 record approaching the All-Star break. Any playoff hopes the team had entering 2022 look bleak now, which lines up the Rockies as a seller at the MLB trade deadline.

Colorado Rockies Trade Rumors
The Rockies don't have a ton of valuable trade chips to help kickstart a small rebuild. They could always trade a veteran reliever like Daniel Bard or Alex Colome, but ESPN's David Schoenfield suggests a different route. He sees getting rid of shortstop Jose Iglesias as the team's top priority.
Iglesias is on an expiring deal and quietly having a great season. The 32-year-old is slashing .289/.332/.382 across 68 games to go along with 24 runs scored, 17 doubles, 23 RBI and 2 stolen bases. Keep in mind his strikeout percentage is also down from 14.1% in 2021 to 10.6% in 2022.
Trading Iglesias away would create a path for top prospect Ezequiel Tovar to make his MLB debut in the final two months of the season. The 20-year-old owns a .318 batting average in Double-A and has stolen 17 bases in 66 games. Any experience he can get will help him develop in the future.
A number of teams could use an upgrade at the SS position prior to the postseason. The Los Angeles Angels and New York Yankees are two teams that stick out as potential Iglesias suitors. For now, the Rockies have odds set at +250000 to win the World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
