One third of NFL teams are reportedly calling the Detroit Lions about a Matthew Stafford trade, it's likely that the Indianapolis Colts are one of them. With Philip Rivers retiring and the team in position to contend now, adding Stafford for the 2021 season would give them legitimate Super Bowl hopes.

The quarterbacks is reportedly already considering the possibility. With that in mind, here's a realistic trade package the Colts can offer the Lions for Matthew Stafford.

Indianapolis Colts Trade Package for Matthew Stafford

Colts Receive: Matthew Stafford
Lions Receive: 2021 No. 21 pick, Colts' 2022 first-round pick

This trade package isn't too complicated, although it is a hefty sum. Still, it's a move to make the Colts legit contenders, so they shouldn't miss out on the chance to nab Stafford from his many suitors.

From Indianapolis' perspective, they get a clear upgrade over Rivers in Stafford, and they just went 11-5 in 2020. Top receivers T.Y. Hilton and Zach Pascal are headed for free agency, but the Colts have the third-most projected cap space this offseason, giving them plenty of room to not only absorb Stafford's contract, but re-sign their receivers or pursue a No. 1 option like Allen Robinson in free agency.

With some free-agent additions, plus rising running back Jonathan Taylor and wideout Michael Pittman Jr., Stafford would be positioned for a career year, especially when guarded by the Colts' truly elite offensive line.

From Detroit's perspective, their inevitable rebuild post-Stafford gets additional ammo outside the No. 7 pick this year with the No. 21 pick and another future first-rounder. The Lions are under a new regime with a new head coach, and they're not expected to contend for years. If they can nail their draft picks, the Motor City could be brought back to life in only a few seasons.

With a top-10 defense and cap space to add more weapons this offseason, the Colts should make a strong offer to Detroit in order to seal their contender status for years to come. Two first-round picks should entice the rebuilding Lions.
